I lifted the rice paper and saw colours and shapes I never could have
planned. Warm encaustic wax had soaked through the paper with the light smell of beeswax in the air.
Even though all of the women at the art retreat used the same tools and the same colours, every single print was completely different.
I didn't know exactly how stuck I was until the experiments reminded me to try things. It didn't matter what those things were - drawings, tiny watercolours, blind-contour experiments, ink splashes, whatever.
This is what easing into spring feels like in my studio.

Most of what I’m making right now will never become a “finished” painting. Right now, my studio feels very messy, but very full of options.

Even if you don’t know why, is there an experiment that holds your attention? I’d love to know which one.
