How to be an art collector in 5 simple steps

There is a huge myth floating around that a "collector of art" is someone who is very wealthy and only buys art as an investment.

The truth is, you are a "collector of art" when you buy a piece of art! Whatever form that takes, whether it is a print, an original, a favourite mug with art on it, a sculpture, a vase,...anything that brings you joy and beautifies your surroundings. That is a true collector.

Here are a few ways to start your own collection.

1. A good rule of thumb is to go with what you love. If you look at a piece of art and feel butterflies or an intuitive pull towards it, something is telling you to take a closer look. You don't have to "know" anything about art. (but if you want to learn more, go for it!)

2. Original or print? Typically it comes down to price (although some limited edition prints can cost as much as an original!). A print is an easy way to add colour to your room and brighten up a wall. Having an original means that you are the only person in the whole world who has that piece of art. Sure, there might be prints of it somewhere, but you get to see and feel the energy of the brushstrokes and touch the textures in the artwork. Both are perfect ways to support an artist you love.

3. Prints, or printed products, are also an easy way to have artwork from an artist you love, while saving up for one of their originals.

4. Saying yes to artwork you love is saying yes to yourself. It validates your tastes, beliefs, and values, and can inspire you daily. It can be a lovely reminder of what is important to you.

5. If cost is stopping you from buying art, ask if the artist has a payment plan. Many artists will work with you, even if they don't advertise it publicly. (I'm one of those artists, just so you know..)

Oh, and a bonus 6. Go buy some art!
