Process : Building Texture

Process : Building Texture

I spend a lot of time creating texture in the background of my paintings, before I even start painting.

This can involve magazine cuttings, cardboard, shapes cut from cardstock, found items, encaustic wax, and thick swirls of compound. Once that all dries, it is time to start the painting.

I think it is a way to 1) build up texture, and 2) make sure I'm not being precious about any one part of the painting or process, so I know I can cover up anything and paint over it.
